Université Paris-Saclay ceases activity on the social media platform X
Université Paris-Saclay, in concertation with its academic community, has decided to cease its activity on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. This decision will be put into place on Thursday 19 December 2024 by the university’s five faculties, three university technical institutes (IUTs), its engineering school (Polytech Paris-Saclay), four grandes écoles (AgroParisTech, CentraleSupélec, ENS Paris-Saclay and IOGS), and the associate member institution, Université Évry Paris-Saclay. It comes following changes to the platform’s content policy, which is no longer in compliance with the European Union’s Code of Practice on Disinformation, making the platform incompatible with the universal values that the university and its community share.
Since its creation, Université Paris-Saclay has been present on various social media platforms, including X, with approximately 32,500 followers. This social media presence is part of the university’s desire for transparency and its active and interactive approach to the sharing and communication of information with various audiences, such as young people, future students, students looking for further study opportunities, and their parents and families, but also with local partners and a broader audience, interested in the university’s academic programmes, research and innovation.
In its communication on social media, as in all of its communication, the university has always strived to remain faithful to the fundamental values of tolerance and humanism, in addition to academic and scientific integrity. These values are essential for a university like Université Paris-Saclay, as key a player in the education and training of current and future citizens, but also as a key player in research and innovation, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in strategic fields to find solutions to the challenges our societies currently face.
The social media platform X breaches a number of these values following the changes made to its content policy, with less moderation of hateful and discriminatory content, and its data access rules. These changes have led to a decrease in the quality, credibility and reliability of the information shared on X, making calm and constructive discussion more difficult.
In this context, Université Paris-Saclay has decided that it will no longer be keeping its X account active as of Thursday 19 December 2024.
The university already has accounts on LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook and has joined Bluesky at: @UniversitéParis-Saclay.bsky.social. You can also follow the university’s news on its website and YouTube channel.
