Patrick Couvreur has been awarded the Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal during the World Biomaterials Congress in Daegu, South Korea, from 26 to 31 May 2024, by Acta Materialia, Inc. a non-profit organisation which represents 36 professional societies worldwide dedicated to the dissemination of science and engineering of materials and biomaterials.

Patrick Couvreur is an emeritus professor at the Institut Galien Paris-Saclay (IGPS - Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS), and a senior member of the Institut de France. Patrick Couvreur is known for his work in nanomedicine, combining galenic science, materials chemistry pharmacology and nanotechnology, which has contributed to improving the treatment of serious diseases like cancer. This Gold Medal comes as a crowning achievement for the former president of the French National Academy of Pharmacy in 2020, who is also one of the world’s most highly cited researchers.

The Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal recognises scientists, engineers and practitioners who have demonstrated leadership in the field of biomaterials. It rewards either materials research that has had a significant and lasting impact on the development of the discipline, or recent work of great originality. With this distinction, Acta Materialia, Inc. not only intends to honour outstanding contributions to the field but also to improve the awareness of the fundamental importance and diversity of materials research, both within the community and the public at large.
