Looking back on the Tropicana press conference at Institut Pascal

Research Article published on 21 June 2024 , Updated on 24 June 2024

Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are all known for the devastating impacts they can have on lives and towns. How can we improve our understanding of these destructive storms and predict their behaviour, particularly in light of climate change? Some of the field’s leading experts tackled these very questions during a press conference held on Monday 3 June 2024 for the TROPICANA scientific programme, organised by the university’s Institut Pascal.

TROPICANA (TROPIcal Cyclones in ANthropocene: physics, simulations & Attribution) is a scientific programme organised by Institut Pascal which aims to address complex issues surrounding tropical cyclones and their relationship with climate change. Lasting for a total of four weeks, the programme includes workshops, discussions, conferences, and outreach events, hoping to encourage collaboration, the sharing of knowledge and project development.

To launch the start of the programme, a hybrid press conference was held on Monday 3 June 2024 in the small auditorium of Institut Pascal. Hosted by Suzana Camargo, a Research Professor at Columbia University (United States), the press conference gave a dozen French and international journalists the chance to put their questions to a panel of experts:

  • Kerry Emanuel, Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Science at MIT (United States)
  • Robert Vautard, Co-Chair of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), CNRS Research Director in Climatology (France)
  • Samira Khodayar, Director of the Mediterranean Centre for Environment Studies, Valencia (Spain)
  • Davide Faranda, CNRS Research Director in Climatology at the Laboratory for Sciences of Climate and Environment (LSCE - CEA/CNRS/UVSQ/Univ. Paris-Saclay) (France).

Questions put the panel included the impact of the increased risk of cyclones in the North Atlantic this year on Southern countries, and the effects of ocean warming on the coming cyclone season.
