9 figures from Université Paris-Saclay awarded the Legion of Honour and the French Order of Merit

On Monday 15 January 2025, approximately one hundred figures from the world of higher education, research and innovation were named or promoted within the ranks of the French national Legion of Honour and the Order of Merit. Nine of them are members of the Université Paris-Saclay community. 

The French National Order of the Legion of Honour - rank of Knight:

  • Sandrine Clavel, professor of private law, honorary dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and co-director of the Business Law and New Technologies Laboratory (DANTE – Univ. Paris-Saclay/UVSQ).
  • Elie Fadel, university professor and hospital practitioner in surgery at the Paris-Saclay Faculty of Medicine and head of the thoracic and vascular surgery and heart-lung transplantation service at Hôpital Marie-Lannelongue.

The French Legion of Honour is the main national order awarded to honour French citizens. It is the highest distinction. It rewards outstanding merit whilst serving the nation, either in a civilian or military capacity.

The French National Order of Merit - rank of Officer:

  • Nathalie Carasco, professor in planetary science and president of ENS Paris-Saclay since 2022.
  • Thibault Damour, theoretical physicist and full professor at the Institut des hautes études scientifiques (IHES – Université Paris-Saclay). · Suzette Delaloge, medical oncologist, senologist, and head of the research programme for cancer detection and prevention at Gustave Roussy.
  • Marie-Claude Gaudel, honorary professor of computer science at Université Paris-Saclay.
  • Laure Saint-Raymond, full professor of mathematics at the Institut des hautes études scientifiques (IHES – Université Paris-Saclay) and member of the French Academy of Sciences.

The French National Order of Merit - rank of Knight: 

  • Fabrice Barlesi, university professor and hospital practitioner in Oncology at the Paris-Saclay Faculty of Medicine, and director general of Gustave Roussy.
  • Claire Thomas-Junius, former top-level athlete, Biology lecturer at Université Évry Paris-Saclay and head of the Biology of Exercise for Performance and Health Laboratory (LBEPS – Univ. Évry/IRBA/Ceritd).

After the Legion of Honour, the French National Order of Merit is the second national order awarded to honour French citizens. It rewards distinguished merit acquired either in a public, civil or military capacity, or as part of a private activity.
