Objectives

The educational and scientific objectives of the course are as follows:
Firstly, the course aims to give national and international students a scientific knowledge base in the theoretical fields of Exercise physiology. This involves training the student in the evaluation and prescription of physical activity for patients suffering from different pathologies (metabolic, inflammatory, cardiorespiratory, cancer); and/or using all physical and/or sports activities for purposes of prevention, rehabilitation (or recovery), post-rehabilitation, re-education, education; and/or for the social integration of people with disabilities or from at-risk populations.

Secondly, the course aims to foster students' integration in the job market as executives in the health and social sectors and in associations, as well as in sports and educational organisations (health institutes, rehabilitation centres, retirement homes, educational medical centres, medical-professional and medical-social institutes, health networks, PA associations, specialised sports federations, fitness centres, local bodies, working in conjunction with at-risk populations).

There are many opportunities in research, development, prevention, rehabilitation, recovery, reintegration and re-education bodies that employ the effects of physical activity for drug-free therapy. These activities address both healthy public (primary prevention) and populations at specific risk (metabolic, cardiorespiratory pathologies, cancer, etc.).

Programme

The first semester will look at various aspects associated with physical activity in the prevention of cancer, cardiorespiratory and inflammatory diseases, the material and methods involved in exercise testing and prescription and will focus on further interactions with research and professional environments.

The module is designed to encourage inter-disciplinary networking and discussion. On completion of the module a student should be able to: Critically evaluate cardiorespiratory dysfunction, cancer and inflammatory diseases and their underlying causes in relation to anatomy, biomechanics, physiology and pathophysiology. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the assessment and management of cardiorespiratory dysfunction, cancer and inflammatory diseases based upon contemporary literature and evidence. Objectifs pédagogiques visés : Contenu : Students will be introduced to the concepts of Complementary medicine that involves the use of non-conventional medical practices in addition to standard treatment, and of alternative medicine, utilised to substitute traditional healthcare. Part of the content will involve looking at alternative medical systems, mind-body interventions, manipulative methods and energy therapies with in particular, but not exclusively, fasting, intermittent fasting, breathing strategies, yoga, dietary supplements, hydrotherapy, massage therapy, hypnotherapy. Objectifs pédagogiques visés : Contenu : The aim of this unit is to prepare students to undertake a research project at master’s level. The unit focuses on the nature and method of research across a wide range of health and Exercise, fitness and sport issues. The unit will also provide advanced exercise assessment and prescription for sedentary subjects and people with chronic conditions At the end of this Unit, students will be able to: Distinguish between the different methods of investigation, data collection and statistical analysis and develop skills to design, collect and analyse data. Conduct a literature research, summarise and critically appraise the work of others over a wide variety of types of published work. Take accurate and valid measurements for calculations and direct measurements of maximal and submaximal oxygen uptake, basal metabolic rate and overall energy expenditure. Measure aspects of pulmonary and cardiac function, relating these to screening and prescription processes. Establish the appropriateness of different test procedures to the needs of patients. Objectifs pédagogiques visés : Contenu : The aim of this unit is to prepare students to design and implement a research project at master’s level. Students will be presented with innovative projects carried out in the various laboratories, hospital units and start ups involved in the field of exercise and chronic diseases with a view to interact with these professionals. The ultimate goal would be the student’s integration in the various research projects carried out for their internship. Students will also participate in various conferences/seminars providing a wealth of topics related to their field of study and beyond. Prerequisites : None. The second semester will mainly deal with the short and long term personal and professional projects of students including a particular attention to the internship.
