M2R - Design Research
The goal of the Master’s degree “Research in Design” is to prompt students to question contemporary life forms through projects and research in design. The goal of the second year is to continue the training in design research with an emphasis on research tools and practice for which each student will develop a personal focus.
Entry profiles for this programme are diverse: - École Normale students having completed a first year at ENS Paris-Saclay, - or students trained at the French Ministry of National Education's school of applied arts or the Ministry of Culture's art and design school at M1 level at least - or students in the first year of Master's courses in design or in other creation/design fields.
COMMUNICATE USING WRITTEN AND ORAL LANGUAGE in French and English.
IDENTIFY AND TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE AESTHETIC, ETHICAL AND POLITICAL ISSUES OF DESIGN.
ACQUIRE TECHNICAL SKILLS ROOTED IN THE PRACTICE OF DESIGN.
ESTABLISH A RESEARCH PROCESS USING DESIGN AS THE SUBJECT, MODE OF APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY.
EXERCISE CRITICAL JUDGMENT AND ELABORATE RELEVANT RESEARCH HYPOTHESES.
SHARE AND PROMOTE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH USING MARKETING TOOLS.
Students acquire solid research experience in their area of expertise, which naturally steers them towards a doctoral programme and a designer-researcher profile.
This Master's opens up a wide range of opportunities, including further studies at doctoral level, careers in teaching at tertiary-level or in research, and jobs that require specific research skills:
- academic career as an assistant professor (at the university as well as in the MEN or Ministry of Culture schools),
- positions of responsibility in the R&D departments of large companies seeking designers who have a capacity for critical thinking, stemming from their research training,
- development of a post (in an agency or similar) that features a research dimension, a requirement now frequently demanded in this field,
- public institutions, etc.
